5 Ways to Boost Your Metabolism

We all know that exercise is essential, but did you know that by combining this and watching your food intake, you’ll ramp up your metabolism and burn more calories by doing almost nothing? I know, it sounds too good to be true but it is! Here are a five ways that you can use food to your advantage and boost your metabolism.

#1 Don’t Skip Breakfast

Eating in the morning jump starts your metabolism and can prevent you from binge eating from hunger cravings later in the day. Just keep in mind that drinking coffee does not necessarily help your metabolism out. The caffeine and sugar in the drink gives you a temporary boost in energy and can suppress your appetite, but only for a short time. This can be bad news. You could be even more hungry after you’ve drank coffee on an empty stomach, increasing the likelihood that you could overeat later in the day. Ideally, your first meal of the day should include foods such as whole grains (example: oatmeal) protein and fat (example: (yogurt or milk). Consuming foods such as these can keep your hunger and energy levels in balance.

#2 Eat More Often

By making it a habit to eat throughout the day, every three to four hours, you can regulate your blood sugar, keeping your appetite in check. When you go too many hours without eating, your metabolism can slow down to try and save energy.

#3 Eat protein at every meal

Proteins take more energy and time to digest, leaving you feeling fuller for longer periods of time. Eating more proteins can help you lose weight even without cutting calories. Some examples of protein include: turkey, fruits and nuts, or even protein bars or drinks that have more than 12 grams of protein.

#4 Hold off on snacking

When we feel less energetic, its natural to want to snack to get that extra boost of energy. Its important, however, not to get hunger and fatigue mixed up. If you are feeling tired, it can help to take a short walk or drink a glass of cold water. If you really are hungry, eating complex carbs and/or eating protein rich snacks can help.

#5 Consume enough for your body’s needs

To lose weight, we must eat to maintain our body’s metabolism. Too often its assumed that the less calories you eat the better, but this is not the case. Consuming the right calories to fuel your body and cutting out foods that are high in calories and fat such as soda, juice or candy is best to put your body on the right track to keeping up your metabolism.

To maintain and even boost your metabolism, it can help you to eat breakfast, eat often throughout the day, consume protein and complex carbs, snack only when your hungry and consume enough calories for your body’s needs. It may sound like a lot of work, but by making purposeful eating a habit, a little bit every day can go a very long way.
