7 Principles of Exercise

When developing an effective exercise program, sticking to certain basic principles is important. This applies to those at every level of physical fitness and training, from the casual runner to the triathlete.

Here are the 7 basic principles of exercise.

1. Regularity

To get anywhere with your training, you must exercise, preferably often. Exercising regularly combined with resting sleeping and following a healthy diet are essential.

2. Progression

How long and/or hard you exercise has to gradually increase. This increase helps to improve your fitness level.

3. Balance

A balanced exercise program should include the five components of physical fitness. Over-training in any one area could hurt the effectiveness of the others.

4. Variety

Introducing new activities into your workout regimen helps to alleviate boredom and increases your motivation to complete your exercise program.

5. Specificity

Training for a purpose or a specific goal helps. For example, if you want to become a better runner, you could train for a 5k or 10k by putting together an exercise program that emphasizes this goal.

6. Recovery

Resting should be a part of any exercise program. Building in a rest day after training helps to improve recovery. Exercising alternate muscle groups when strength training also helps.

7. Overload

Overloading your muscles helps to put enough stress on your body than would the normal amount of stress it usually endures. This is done to encourage a training effect encouraging the growth of the muscles.
